More info
Spider 916 (1994-2005) Alfa Romeo Spider (Tipo 916) Phase 3 Production period: 1994-2004 Body versions: Convertible At the Geneva Motor Show in March 1994, Alfa Romeo presented a completely new generation of Spider and a closed sister model with the designation GTV. Both models have the internal factory designation Tipo 916. They are technically based on the Fiat Tipo Due platform and are therefore related to the Fiat Tipo, the Lancia Delta and the Alfa Romeo 145 as well as their notchback derivatives. Development work began in the summer of 1987, a few months after Alfa Romeo was taken over by Fiat, and continued until 1993. Enrico Fumia developed the body design for Pininfarina. The wedge-shaped body picks up on some significant features of the Audi Quattro Quartz show car, which Fumia had already designed in 1981. These include recessed round headlights, a hood that extends into the sides of the car, the wide beading that separates the hood from the bumpers and the horizontal rear light strip extending across the entire width of the car, which was a core element of Alfa Romeo design from the 164 of 1987 onwards. The Spider has a short notchback. Unlike the GTV, which has a spoiler lip, the trunk lid of the Spider slopes down towards the rear. Some sources see this as a quote from the lines of the first Spider 115 version (Osso di Seppia). The soft top is made of fabric and is operated manually ex works; an electro-hydraulic mechanism was available for an extra charge. (Source, Wikipedia)
